Gaziantep - cradlE of diVerSity

5 months... 2 volunteers... 1 city... ...READY FOR EVS!!!!

1 week, away from Gaziantep...

This time we would also like to talk a bit about the most recent holiday in Turkey, called kurban bayramı. During it, rather wealthier people sacrifice mainly sheeps and share those among people in-need. Visiting older relatives is also well-spread with taking gifts, for example some sweets.

For the first time we spent more than one week separately, visiting other volunteers from on-arrival-training. This also gave a big opportunity to get to know different places and try local cuisines. The differences can be easily recognised even within one city.

During one week with friends from another organization we tried hitchhiking first Mersin, and after spending there 2 days, we started our journey to Ankara.

Ankara is very different from other turkish cities in every circumstances. It is one of the most developed cities but has also very poor areas just near to the centre. As it is a political-financial centre, rather than a historical-cultural one there are not so many old monuments. Nevertheless, Atatürk commemorial place and Ankara Castle belong to the most important sights.

Personally the journey itself with desperately trying to talk in Turkish, and the mausoleum are the favourite ones. During that week I gained so much experience and found answers for many of my questions.

Gergö.
